I'm 60 now and can very well recall my dad taking me to a barber when I was young teen. It was one of the priciest barbers in all of Sacramento and he treated me to haircut there. Price with tip: $14. That was an outrageous price for a man's haircut in Sacramento in the early 1970s, and I frankly don't recall if I got a good haircut then or not. Today, every time I need a trim I go to Great Clips and with tip spend $20. And thus far I've been pleased with everyone of the dozen or so haircuts I've had there. Plus, they keep a record of my preferences. When I take a seat, I'm asked: "3 buzz on the side, hair trimmed to an inch and a half on the top?" I like that no matter who seats me, my preferences are recorded: it's a combination of "personal touch" and the convenience of not having to repeat my instructions. I have no reason to go elsewhere. And about the twenty bucks? Well, that would have been outrageous 50 years ago, but it's a very reasonable sum for a haircut these days.
